Teams: The Essentials Of Effective Teams

July 11, 2008 · Author: Duncan · 40 views · Filed Under Management

Many teams prosper and go on to achieve great results. On the flip side there are often teams that never get out of the starting blocks. The difference between the two are some team essentials that lay the foundation for effective teams. So what are these essentials?

1. Common purpose

Teams are most effective when they are focussed on a common purpose or outcome. It might be the launch of new product where there is a real belief on what the new product has to offer. On the other hand it might be trying to achieve a turnaround in fortunes or performance of an organisation. These are very different circumstances but the common purpose is what brings people together.

2. Belief

A team needs to have belief that it can achieve results collectively despite what often appears to be immovable obstacles. Belief should not be confused with over confidence. Teams that have belief know that there is a way round, over, under or through the obstacles they face.

3. Respect

Teams that get results have a high degree of respect for each other. This does not mean that they agree with each other all of the time, just that they are open to exploring different ideas or perspectives and the diverse range of ideas available.

4. Commitment

Teams that get results do not carry people. Individual team members commit to delivering the outcome and expect others to be committed too.

5. Trust

If you have ever been part of a team where there is a lack of trust, you know how destructive it can be. I know that I have been on teams in the past where individual priorities took priority and as a result little or nothing was achieved.

Bottom line if you want to get results from teams you need to get some essentials in place. To help you do that I invite you to download a free e-book at http://www.goalsandachievements.co.uk/resources.php
