Plants And Flowers: Planting 101

Creating a flower garden can be one of the most rewarding hobbies that you can have. Not only will you beautify your yard, but you will have the satisfaction of creating living art that is all your own. In order to create a beautiful garden of flowers and plants, though, you must be dedicated to putting in the time and effort to help them grow and thrive.

Decide where you want to plant. If you have a garden area already, or a large space around bushes or trees that you would like to add flowers to, these are great. Some people enjoy an ivy or morning glory growing up their fences or deck trellis. What a better way to start your morning with a cup of tea on the deck while the morning glories are opening.

How about potted plants for your porch or patio, or even for indoors? You will have to decide where these will go, too. Even though potted plants are portable, the plants you choose will need certain amounts of sunlight and so shouldn’t be moved to a different environment.

Now it is time to choose the types of flowers and plants you want to grow. Choose wisely and make sure that you know the details of each flower and plant you pick out. Check whether they are annuals (only last a year) or perennials (come back every season). Find out whether they are sun or shade thriving plants. How much water do they need? How tall or wide to they grow, and how many will you need? These are all questions that need answered before you buy.

Be sure to plant the taller plants and flowers at the back of the garden and the shorter ones and ground cover plants in front. Include some green plants like hosta or some ornamental grasses with your flowers for contrast. Hosta is best grown in shaded or part shade areas but will thrive with little care. Ornamental grasses can grow quite tall and can include some interesting textures to your garden and they can be planted in almost any environment and take little care.

Some popular garden flowers are day lilies, which like hot summers and a bit of shade in the afternoon to keep their vibrant colors. Day lilies also need well drained soil. Day lilies are a perennial and come in over 1,300 varieties, so there is truly a day lily for every garden. They are also edible and can make an interesting adornment for a gourmet meal.

Phlox is a perennial ground cover that lives and thrives in nearly any conditions. This popular plant has a tiny, star shaped flower and comes in a wide variety of colors. Phlox is a great addition to a raised garden because it will flow over the sides and down the garden border beautifully. Many people who live on hills plant phlox and allow it to spill down the hills.

Geraniums are great for a garden but are more popular as potted plants. Geraniums are easy to transplant and require watering a few times a week, and they love partly shady areas like porches. Geraniums come in a variety of colors and in hanging baskets around the outside of the house can complement your flower garden.

Regardless of what types of flowers and plants you decide on, you will have embarked on a fun, rewarding adventure that will keep you busy for years to come.
